Just like humans, dogs and cats can also suffer from heart problems. To raise awareness among pet owners, the month of September is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of cardiovascular health for your furry companions.

“Heart diseases, also known as cardiopathies, can arise due to genetic predisposition or lifestyle factors, such as lack of physical activity. In larger dog breeds, it is common to observe a condition called dilated cardiomyopathy, in which the heart dilates and reduces its ability to contract and pump blood throughout the animal’s body. It can be caused by viral infections, genetic and hormonal disorders,” explains veterinarian Suzana Melo from Pearson Saúde Animal.
Cardiovascular diseases in pets can be silent, making them difficult to diagnose. Signs such as excessive fatigue, difficulty breathing, and exercise intolerance can be indicative of problems. Therefore, it is important for pet owners to be vigilant and take their pets for regular check-ups with the veterinarian.
One of the most serious heart conditions is mitral valve mixomatous degeneration, also known as valvular endocardiosis. This condition causes the degeneration of heart valves and is the most common factor of heart failure, meaning it impairs the heart’s ability to pump blood.
“Such heart diseases and others can be directly related to the animal’s habits: obesity, irregular feeding, age, and sedentary lifestyle are factors always taken into account in the diagnosis. Adopting a healthy and active routine is important, along with the use of important supplements like Nutricore Pulse, a product rich in omega-3 that promotes cardiovascular health,” emphasizes Suzana.
“Although Nutricore Pulse is a supplement, it is always necessary to consult a veterinarian for the best care for animals, considering specific needs, health history, and behavior,” reminds the expert from Pearson Saúde Animal.
